Florence's region continues to advance its position as the nation's most dynamic producer of premium wines, following decades of turning out popular Chianti in straw-covered flasks. Tuscany's modern renaissance in wine began in Chianti, in the central hills around Siena and Florence, but it rapidly spread to take in the strip along the Mediterranean coast that was not previously known for its vineyards.
Much of the progress has come with classical reds based on the native Sangiovese vine, Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Carmignano, all DOCG. But growing success with other reds (especially the stylish non-DOC wines known as "Super Tuscans") has been augmented by new styles of whites to enhance the region's reputation. Chianti, still the dominant force in Tuscan viniculture, has long rated as the most Italian of wines. This is partly because it is the most voluminous and widely sold classified wine, but also because it has a personality that cannot be pinned down. Its multifarious nature is quintessentially Italian.
The Chianti Rufina Wine Tasting
The Rufina is one of the smallest and least known of the Chianti sub-zones, yet it is one of most genuine and picturesque. The Chianti Rufina has one of the oldest histories in all of Chianti. First designated as a wine zone by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosimo III in 1716. The Rufina lies in the heart of the Val Di Sieve, in the foothills of the Apennine mountains. The rugged and wild terrain of the Rufina has a unique micro climate of cold nights and hot days and produces very full-bodied and long living wines sometimes capable of cellaring for over 40 years. Located in some of the most beautiful hills to the north east of Florence, the Chianti Rufina is one the easiest reached, but least traveled of the wine zones of Tuscany.
The Chianti Classico
With over 700 wineries the Classico is one of the largest and most famous of the Chianti sub zones. Located south of Florence in the hills around the towns of Greve, Castellina, and Radda in Chianti, the Chianti Classico is home to the famous Gallo Nero wines (the black Rooster). In this zone you will taste an assortment of Chianti Classico wines in an awe inspiring setting.
Montepulciano
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made from a Sangiovese clone that is locally known as prugnolo gentile. As early as the seventeenth century it was crowned by many as "the king of Tuscan wines", and because the nobility eagerly sought it out, it became known as a 'noble' and 'aristocratic' wine. The hills around Montepulciano are gentle and rolling and provide an excellent backdrop for drinking one of Tuscany's most prestigious wines.
Brunello
Wines from the Brunello region are made with a local clone of Sangiovese, which gives its name to this highest of quality wine. These wines are aged for over 4 years before being released to market (over 5 years for the reserves), and are among Tuscany's most important and longest living wines.
