Tours to Catalonia

Catalonia

Like the rest of the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula, it was colonized by Ancient Greeks and Carthaginians and participated in the pre-Roman Iberian culture. With the rest of Iberia, it was part of the Roman Empire, followed by Visigothic rule. The northernmost part of Catalonia was briefly occupied by the Moorish (Muslim-ruled) al-Andalus in the eighth century, but after the defeat of Emir Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqiwas's troops in Tours in 732

Girona

The first inhabitants in the region were Iberians. Later, the Romans built a citadel there, which was given the name Gerunda. The Visigoths ruled in Girona until it was conquered by the Moors. Finally, Charlemagne reconquered it in 785 and made it one of the fourteen original countships of Catalonia. Guifre I incorporated Girona to the county of Barcelona in 878. Alfonso I of Aragon declared Girona to be a city in the 11th century.

The 12th century saw a flourishing of the Jewish community of Girona, with one of the most important Kabbalistic schools in Europe. The Rabbi of Girona, Moshe ben Nahman Gerondi was appointed Great Rabbi of Catalonia. The history of the Jewish community of Girona ended in 1492, when the Catholic Kings expelled all the Jews from Spain.

Today, the Jewish ghetto or Call is one of the best preserved in Europe and is a major tourist attraction. On the north side of the old city is the Montjuic (or hill of the Jews in medieval Catalan), where an important religious cemetery was located.

Girona suffered several sieges by the French during the 17th and 18th centuries. Finally, Napoleon conquered the city in 1809, after 7 months of siege. The defensive city walls were demolished in the 19th century to allow for the expansion of the city.

Girona landmarks include Saint Mary's Cathedral and the Passeig de la Muralla.

The tour lasts about 3 hours long, and we will ride mainly on cycling paths, pedestrian zones and parks on very comfortable bikes. Along the way we will make stops to hear the explanations from our guides, take some photos and have a drink.

All you need to know is how to ride a bike.

Dali Triangle

The life and work of the Figueres-born artist are condensed into three emblematic spaces. In the Theatre-Museum, in Figueres, visitors can admire works such as Galarina, The Spectre of Sex Appeal or Leda Atomica; surrealist installations such as the Rainy Taxi or the Mae West room, and Dali's recurring obsessions such as his Empurdanese roots or the figure of Gala, his wife and muse. The second space is the House-Museum in Portlligat, outside Cadaques, a row of fishermen's huts that Dali turned into his residence and workshop; the result is a labyrinthine structure with small spaces strung together and full of split levels, where the furniture and personal objects of the artist are conserved.

The Triangle is completed by the Castle of Pubol, in the municipality of La Pera, in the Baix Emporda, which Dali bought for Gala in fulfilment of his promise to make her the queen of a castle. In addition to the collection of works of art, visitors can see Gala's private rooms, her collection of haute couture dresses, the couple's Cadillac and the crypt where Gala is buried.

Dali Theatre Museum

Inaugurated in 1974, the Dali Theatre-Museum was built upon the remains of the former Figueres theatre. It contains the broadest range of works spanning the artistic career of Salvador Dali (1904-1989), from his earliest artistic experiences and his creations within the Surrealist movement down to the works of the last years of his life.

Although the work exhibited is basically by Dali, there are also works by other artists who Dalí wanted to include: Antoni Pitxot, Evarist Vallès, the private collection of Salvador Dali with works by El Greco, Marià Fortuny, Modest Urgell, Ernest Meissonier, Marcel Duchamp, Gerard Dou, etc. Similarly, in different galleries of the Theatre-Museum, works can be found by Bouguereau, John de Andrea, Wolf Vostell, Meifrén and Ernst Fuchs, among others.

"Where, if not in my own town, should the most extravagant and solid of my work endure, where if not here? The Municipal Theatre, or what remained of it, struck me as very appropriate, and for three reasons: first, because I am an eminently theatrical painter; second, because the theatre stands right opposite the church where I was baptised; and third, because it was precisely in the hall of the vestibule of the theatre where I gave my first exhibition of painting." Dali

Salvador Dalí decided, early in the 1960’s, to construct his museum inside the ruins of the old Municipal Theatre of Figueres designed by the architect Roca i Bros, was constructed between 1849 and 1850 but was destroyed by a fire at the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939.

In 1961, Ramon Guardiola, then the mayor of Figueres, proposed to Salvador Dalí the creation of a museum dedicated to his work. The painter was captivated by the ghostly enchantment of the theatre, designed by the architect Roca i Bros, constructed between 1849 and 1850.

The idea of bringing together his work in the old theatre of Figueres excited Dalí, and he dedicated himself to the task for over a decade, collaborating in it and designing the smallest details, until it became reality with the official inauguration of the Dalí Theatre-Museum on 28th September 1974.

One of the most visible elements of the museum is the transparent grid structure in the form of a geodesic dome crowning the building, an idea by Salvador Dalí which was realised by the Murcian architect Emilio Pérez Piñero (1935-1972).

Tour Code: MT-BCN-CAT-2
Departures : Daily
Duration: 10 1/24hrs.
Cost: From 179 € pp

To walk around old Girona is not just to stroll along the shadowy alleyways that stretch along the rightbank of the River Onyar: it is to let yourself be captivated by the traces left by the passage of time in the form of architectural and cultural remains. Girona has its origins in the lower Palaeolithic period; the Iberians, the Romans and the Arabs, and notablythe important Jewish community which lived in the city between the 9th and 15th centuries, are just some of the peoples and cultures who successively occupied it. It is no surprise, therefore, that traces of all of these civilisations fill every corner of the streets of the old nucleus of the city.

More than a thousand years of history commingle in the old town, which spreads around the Cathedral, which, with its single broad nave, was built between the 14th and 17th centuries. At the foot of the Cathedral hill extends the Call or Jewish neighbourhood, a labyrinthof streets where the Bonastruc ça Porta Study Centre is located. The Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants; the Gothic former collegiate church of Sant Feliu, which conserves the relics of St. Narcissus, the patron of the city; the archaeological walk; the city wall; the Arab Baths; the houses of the Onyar - all of these are obligatory visits for lovers of the silence born of the splendour of history.

Also we will visit Salvador Dalí's theatre-museum in Figueres, Spain’s most visited museum after the Prado.
