Wine in the Penedes

About the Penedès wine making region - For thousands of years, the Earth of the Penedés has been associate to the conreo of the vine and the wine elaboration. To know the Penedés is also to know a landscape and people that, generation after generation, have made of the vine their main economic motor, social and cultural.

Great Wine Producers

Torres

Great wines are born only in the best vineyards. At Torres we have made special efforts to select and purchase some of the very best vineyards. Over the years we have built up over 1,300 hectares of own vineyards in Catalonia. They make up an exceptional combination, due to their expanse and variety. At Torres we cultivate our different vineyards with the most advanced and demanding viticultural techniques, always aware of our environmental responsibility. We are conscious of the fact that our vineyards are part of he natural environment and are our most prized collective inheritance, actual and cultural. The Bodegas Torres ageing cellars stretch along two kilometres of underground galleries excavated at different levels where there are 20,000 oak barrels maturing. Miguel Torres has always known of the great importance of select oak woods for the ageing of each of his wines. According to the style of a wine, the variety of grapes used to make it, its vintage, a type of wood is selected. The best new wood from the forests of Europe and America are chosen: Ohio, Virginia, Tronçais, Nevers, Allier or Limousin...

Jean Leon

Jean León at the age of 19, with just a small suitcase for luggage, he embarked on a long and arduous journey that would take him to Paris, New York and finally to Hollywood. Years later, fortune would lead him to set up in partnership with James Dean to create a world-unique restaurant: "La Scala" in Beverly Hills. Known and respected in gastronomic and oenological circles, in 1963 he decided to embark on the adventure of creating the wine that would carry his name, Jean León.n

"Marilyn would arrive very early, at 5.30 p.m., the evening opening time for La Scala. The actress always sat at Table 14. The famous actor Paul Newman would arrive a little later, at 7.30 p.m. According to Jean León, the most difficult customer was Humphrey Bogart. After dinner, he would always end up ranting and raving about Hollywood directors and producers. Warren Beatty preferred to eat in the kitchen when he came in alone. Other assiduous visitors were Fred Astaire, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tony Franciosa, Marlon Brando, Robert Wagner, Gary Cooper and David Janson, who always liked to sit at the same tables; sometimes even in the most discreet corners, so as not to be seen.n

Jean León met five U.S. presidents including Lyndon B. Johnson. In 1962, he was with Richard Nixon on the night that he lost the elections. With Kennedy, he often talked about Spain and they always met up whenever the latter visited Los Angeles. He said that President Ford was the friendliest of all the presidents, whilst with Ronald Reagan he shared a passion for fine wines."

The winery’s philosophy has always been oriented towards quality, elegance and limited production so that individualised control of all wines throughout the process can be ensured. This is why, despite the technical advances incorporated by the winery, many tasks are still performed in a manual and traditional way, thus guaranteeing the perfect monitoring of all processes.

The Jean León winery for our next visit is situated at the heart of the Penedés region. It is acknowledged as having been one of the first wineries in Spain to have fermented white wines in oak casks.

The Jean Leon winery was designed and built in 1964, in the Bordeaux Chateau style. It stands at the centre of the estate, at one of its highest points, and is surrounded by the company’s own vineyards.

The external appearance of the winery has undergone few changes, and it maintains the same classical presence it had almost 40 years ago.

However, from the time it was built, the inside of the Jean Leon winery has always been home to the latest technological advances for the production of wines of the highest expression.

The winery design, by Domingo Triay, is inspired by 1960’s American architecture and is integrated naturally into the vineyard landscape following the curve of the mountainside.

Then after the winery visit we will visit Sitges a white town overlooking a blue sea, now an important tourist resort and it also has a medieval quarter, with impressive views over the Mediterranean, with its narrow, winding cobbled streets.

Independent Day Trip to Montserrat, Torres Winery and Sitges

Duration: 11/2hrs

Cost: $87.00 pp

Itinerary Details & Secure Online Booking

Visit three outstanding attractions on a full-day trip from Barcelona. You'll tour the famous Torres Winery, ride the rack railway to the top of Montserrat, pay a visit to Montserrat Monastery and relax by the beach at colorful Sitges. Best of all, this is a partially guided tour and you will have plenty of time to spend at your leisure at each attraction.

First stop is the Torres Winery (Bodegas Torres), where you will take a tour to find out how Spanish wine is made. Then you'll continue to the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat, founded in the 11th century. The Montserrat mountains provide a mystical backdrop for the Virgin of Montserrat, the patron saint of Catalonia, who is worshiped at the shrine in the monastery's Royal Basilica.

While at Montserrat, you'll ride to the top of the mountain on the rack railway for panoramic views, and enjoy the monastery's audiovisual presentation, Montserrat portes endins (history of Montserrat).

Next you'll travel to cosmopolitan Sitges, which was a meeting place for Modernist writers, musicians, critics, sculptors and painters in the 1980s, and was called the Mecca of Modernism.

At Sitges you can relax on the beach, stroll along the promenade and spend some time shopping. Your ticket includes discounts at numerous shops, restaurants and places of interest in Sitges.

Sitges is a small city about close to Barcelona renowned for its Film Festival and Carnival. Between the hills and the sea, it is known for its much-frequented beaches, nightspots, historical sites and gay lief during the summer.

While the roots of Sitges' artsy reputation dates back to the late 19th century, when Catalan painter Santiago Rusinol took up residence there during the summer, the town really came into its own during the 1960s, when it was the only centre for the counterculture on the mainland of Spain (then still under the dictatorship of Franco), and became known as a sort of "Ibiza in miniature".
